[Day 11 - Early Evening] Bon Festival: Game Stalls!

Post by Tamori Kanna »

Welcome to the Bon Festival!

Image

Simple stalls have been erected to provide light entertainment to the festival's visitors of all ages, with simple prizes to win. In-between these stalls are booths that provide refreshments and snacks, as well as some that sell simple trinkets and other festival-related knicknacks. For many, the festival is as much a day of relaxation and fun, as well as a day to venerate and honor the departed, and folks wearing their festive yukata is a common sight.

The area have many signs and decorations giving thanks to all the businesses and people that have contributed to making this part of the festival the delight that it is. Which of course includes the big names of KINSENKA BREWERIES 🏵️ and UOMOTO CO. 🐟, as well as the many, many local shops of Nakahama.

Players can play as many games as they wish, but each game only once (for the purposes of rolls and rewards, you are free to say that you spent all night doing the sack race if you wish, but you only roll for it once)

Sack Race
A game of endurance, where each participant is given a rough burlap sack which they must place their legs into, forcing them to hop as they race to see who will win. Those who successfully make it through get one prize.

The participants roll Athletics/Stamina at TN 15 to hop without falling over during the race and may call raises to claim additional prizes with their attempts.

Prizes here include samples of skincare products (courtesy of Usagi no Yomogi MediSpa), common and uncommon cards for Fantasy Fight (in packs of 3), and various netsuke of the Fortunes (both great and minor).

Egg-and-Spoon Race
Various prizes are put on display and the participant must safely carry an egg on a shallow spoon without dropping it in a short race. Those who successfully make it through without losing their egg get one prize.

The participants roll Athletics/Agility at TN 15 to claim one prize and may call raises to claim additional prizes with their attempts.

Prizes here includes samples of skincare products (courtesy of Usagi no Yomogi MediSpa), small bags of konpeito, and plush-charms of various clan and zodiac-animals.

Goldfish Scooping
The participants are given a small scoop made with washi paper and a bowl to scoop out young bronze fi from a shallow pool filled with them. The objective is to scoop out as many goldfish from the pond before the wash paper breaks.

Participants roll Hunting/Perception at TN15 to get one goldfish and may try again but the next difficulty is raised by +TN2 (going from 15 to 17, then 17 to 19 and so on). On failure, the washi paper breaks and the game is over.

The prize here is that you can keep the goldfish you catch!

Draw-Your-Fortune!
Not so much a game, but a quick-and-easy way for anyone to get a glimpse of their near future! Long thin bamboo-sticks are placed in a container together, and the participant must shake the container until a stick comes out. The bamboo-stick will tell your fortune!
The participant rolls a 1d10 to determine the result of their Fortune!

1-4: You will have good luck!
5-7: You will have bad luck!
8-9: You will have exceptionally good luck!
10: You will have exceptionally bad luck!

Before the evening got serious, Taraka swung by the booth games to take advantage of the Tamori's invitation. While not things she was typically best suited for, it'd be a shame not to try? So dressed in her dark blue and grey yukata with golden winged embroidered carps, she tried her luck.

The sack race was fun, but she stumbled at the end, so no luck there.

Now the egg and spoon race, she was good at. While not an athlete, her time spent piloting drones had given her good agility, and the egg made it to the finish! She'd pick up the sample pack of beauty goods. It only felt fair to sample the Dragon's wares.

Now goldfish catching, here Taraka was confident she'd shine. But her player had exhausted sakkaku's limited good graces, and the net broke without a catch. Ah well, she didn't really want one to care for anyways.

Finally she drew her fortune.

'Bad Luck!' said the fortune stick.

"Pff, we'll just see about that stick." she said.

One of the absolute first things Honoka had to do, was to get her fortune drawn. A conversation she needs to have looming over her mind, and making her frightfully nervous. Any little sign that might promise her hope was like a life preserver. So, when she drew the stick for extreme luck her eyes became affixed by it like it was gospel. Holding that stick in her hand she could believe, truly believe, everything was going to work out somehow.

While Honoka prepared for the sack race, she set Crabbo to the side with the stick she asked to keep. Knowing her good fortune was well protected in Crabbo's hands she could allow herself to enjoy the races that followed. Participating not only in the sack race, but the egg and spoon, and finally coming down to the goldfish scooping station. Where she would manage to scoop not just one, but two goldfish, and some part of her nerve wracked heart sang like this was a fortune in and of itself.

Sumiko found the stalls a really cute addition to what appeared to normally be a very sombre festival. She had decided to visit a fortune drawing one, expecting the worst and was pleasantly surprised by getting a super lucky bamboo! That meant everything else was going to go well!

...Not quite. Her luck with sack racing and balancing eggs was poor and she failed in both. Disappointed, she went to visit the last stall and found goldfish scooping. It seemed this is where her luck was meant to be, as the girl walked away with a large bag and 4 happily swimming around goldfish.

Haruhi was excited to attend the festival. The games looked fun. And the prizes!

She could not quite get the rhythm of the sack race. 7 v 15 (https://sakkaku.org/r/21893). Failure.

But she had that egg in the care of her spoon. Like a mother bird protecting an egg. 21 v 15 (https://sakkaku.org/r/21894). Success! She claimed a Crane plush-charm.

Those goldfish were so pretty! But never had washi paper dissolved so quickly. 2 v 15 (https://sakkaku.org/r/21895). Failure.

And ... a fortune stick! What lay ahead? Hopefully good things. But she'd face whatever the stick revealed. A 3 = good luck. (https://sakkaku.org/r/21896) Good luck! Yay! And she was surely the luckiest girl in the world for she had a date later that evening!

Having everything ready to set up later at the beach, Nagisa finds a small amount of time to browse the various stalls. While not exactly really wanting many prizes or anything of the like, the Kaiu stops in front of the fortunes.

She takes one.

Oh! It’s good luck. That’s nice! She does certainly feel lucky as of late. Aside from being kidnapped that is.

With her target not in sight, Sumie decided that it would be best to kill some time with some of the festival games. They were too celebratory and feel-good to her liking, but at least there was a competitive aspect that gave her the opportunity to ruin somebody's day! Sure, it might have been a child too young to even be sent for samurai schooling, or it might have been someone who wasn't taking the games seriously...but why let the small technicalities make this any less than it was? A win is a win!

Sumie snatched hold of a burlap sack for racing. She was sure to take a quick analysis of the material and its quality. Was it one of those thin ones that tore easily if any pressure was applied? Or was it firm and steady enough to carry a body across the island? Well, a good sack race would determine where the sack would find itself. She was rather zealous with her efforts, pushing herself so that she would make it to the finishing line in first place, just barely beating a few people by shoving them with her shoulder.

The cards immediately had her attention! But then they were...chaff?! "Ugh, waste of time!" She would declare before tossing the common cards in the air for a child to pick up soon after.

At least, the real prize was the burlap sack! Yes, this should do...

She would pull to check her fortune and find out that it was utterly disappointing! "Psh! Bad luck? I'll be the judge of that! Stupid lameo fortune..."

A festival wouldn't be one without festival food, and festival games.

Despite Itsuka's long-time difficulties on her relationship with much of her family -shiryo included - the Bon Odori had always one of her favourite festivals. That was true even from a tender age - perhaps it was the lanterns lighting up the night, perhaps the stories, perhaps the games and special food themselves. But if she liked it back then, she'd liked the date even more as an adult.

The lanterns fluttering around always reminded her of fireflies now, which was always a delight - even if a slightly painful delight for the last few years.

But that pain didn't prevent her from enjoying the festival. Not in the last two years, not this year.

She threw herself enthusiastically into the games, getting a good number of snacks in between.

The fire in her heart seemed to guide her well, too. She was quite successful in the races she participated in... and when she took out a bamboo stick, it predicted good fortune. In a rather cryptic way, as the lady receiving her on the stall said.

But good luck was good luck, and her spirit kept shining bright!

The first stall the Miya happens across is that of the old fortune-telling game. A single shake fairly throws a stick into her hand: "You will have exceptionally bad luck!"

"Really?" she says. "After today already?"

But when she tries her hand at scooping goldfish, not only does the paper break as soon as it hits the water, a fish voids itself through the hoop, leaving a stringy thing clinging to the emptied ring. Nor yet does the Miya fare well racing with an egg held in a spoon, but instead stumbles to drop the egg in a cracked mess and finding blood alongside the yolk. by the time she tries herself at the sack race, she should know better, but presses ahead stubbornly anyway, though she is by far the last to finish her heat.

The Miya sighs heavily. This just has not been the best day for her, now, has it?
