[Day 1 - Early Evening] Bid Event: Making an Impression

[Kitsune Soratoshi]

Amid the swirl of party guests, a tall young gentleman in spectacles and a black suit didn't stand out much. Kitsune Soratoshi had anticipated that reality, however, and he knew that the Yasuki business style that would likely dominate the gathering called for both business cards and a gift for the governor that would, in fact, stand out.

The young Fox carried out his strategy as planned, starting with scattering a few of his personally crafted business cards on the open tables where guests could take their food and beverages. Soratoshi also made sure they were in the hands of a number of attendees at the party, especially those who were aggressively socializing, unconcerned with the look of their target so long as they seemed important enough to be a guest.

After extricating himself from a number of conversations he had forgotten as soon as he turned around, the Kitsune moved to one side of the reception area, keenly looking for signs of his cards' success and appreciation throughout the crowd. Unfortunately, what he saw were largely the same cards on tables, just as he'd left them, their nature-scaped backs mistaken for part of the decor. Worse, he spotted a number of his limited edition, hand-crafted cards already discarded on the ground, mixing with others that had fallen from hands, pockets or purses - clearly the barrier for recognition in such a dynamic, multi-clan setting was even higher than Soratoshi had planned on.

Exhaling slowly but angrily, he stalked off to bring forward his gift and show these brutes and dilletantes what quality workmanship really looks like.

The Kitsune's gift had been in the safe-keeping of the governor's security detail until its presentation and would be closely watched by them for the remainder of the evening, as it was both beautiful and practical. Soratoshi had modified a hunting rifle so that an entire carp figure, cut and molded from aluminum to keep from adding significant weight, extended down both sides of the weapon. Its tail arched above the trigger guard and its body ran almost the entire length of the gun, leaving just a few inches of the barrel extending from the carp's open mouth. A finely woven shoulder sling ended in sling swivels adorned with small crabs, so the weapon could be displayed such that the crabs seemed to holding on to the comparatively gigantic fish.

Most of the words of Soratoshi's presentation were lost amid the crowd as there were so many murmurs of question, scandal and awe. The Kitsune smirked after he'd finished and was stepping away to rejoin the crowd. Clearly the slightly scandalized but awestruck reaction was what he'd hoped for all along. That'll show them.

[Daidoji Chitose]

One great thing about traditions was that they seldom changed. Sure, Chitose had been trained to behave herself decades ago, but that was still a passable effort for going into court.

Her gift, however, was anything but ancient. "This is a humble offering so that one need not compromise protection for comfort," she explained. "The vest distributes armor plating while also aiding with circulation, ideal for long deployments."

By the end of her spiel, there were probably many who wondered why some dour soldier would choose to present a simple mesh for military purposes. But at the end of the day, you can't take the soldier out of the war.

[Kaiu Tetsu]

Tetsu has gone out of his way to make cards for the event. Forget finding a printer, to get the right indent he build his own press and hands them out. It's been a boring time and with not really knowing anyone, the gift is easy: a diorama of Nakahama city with mini functioning power grid. It goes over well

[Suzume Hitomi]

Hitomi normally didn't worry much about clan colors, but for such a formal event, it seemed sensible to break them out. Her pleated hakama and furisode were black, with collar and sleeve trim of the Sparrow's dun brown, and embroidery of the same shade depicting stalks of grain along the leg hems and swinging sleeves. Her hair was bound up in small braids held with pins decorated with trailing strings of tiny brown feathers.

Of course she had cards, something to present to customers who browsed and fellow business folk at events (no doubt several more would be handed out to other attendees). Thick ivory paper with an embossed mon in a metallic version of the clan's official brown color at the top held the deeper brown ink running vertically below with her name and that of the shop. She held it with both hands in a deep bow as she presented it to governor Ayame.

After passing the card along, her gift was retrieved from within a sleeve. A small box, simply carved of some strong-grained wood--t had the feel of driftwood to it in the weathered shade and gentle grain--was opened to reveal a brooch about 2 inches wide with the obvious wear of age and a style that might be familiar from historical dramas. It was relatively simple, just images engraved on metal, edged with single row of tiny sapphires.

Delicately engraved lines that seemed like they should be words, but were obviously not kanji, ran around the edge of the bronze oval disc. A stylized river, with a figure kneeling beside it with a large vessel of some sort completed the image. "An artifact of old Rokugan, from the lands past the dessert that once held other empires. This one seems to be a charm worn for plentiful water and safety upon the river worn by someone from a House Haffit. While the powers they called upon are not known to us now, the sentiment seemed fitting here in the islands."

[Kaiu Ryosei]

The morning rain gave way to a pleasant evening and Ryosei dressed accordingly. He wore a dark blue kimono with a crab mon on it over his breast. He did not normally wear his family mon to many occasions, he was still part of the family but that relationship was strained enough without him representing them officially at events. His clothing was of fine make but of few layers to accommodate the humidity from the earlier rains. He strode through the gardens for a while and enjoyed the scenery during the early parts of the event not looking to mingle too closely with anyone yet.

when time came for introductions Ryosei presented the card that he made for his himself as the owner of a local business. The lines were exact and the style was modern, the heaviness of the paper just right not too thick to be demanding but just enough to have some heft in the hand. the dark blue ink had a metallic sheen to it in the light, it appeared black until the light bounced off and one could see the subtleties of the colors laid into the card. It wasn't the most impressive card ever made but it certainly turned a few heads.

As time moved on they were asked to present gifts to the governess and Ryosei had made something himself to give her. He had heard she served some time on Wolf's Eye and so he had presented her with a animatronic wolf. Nothing too intense, no kami present in it to make it act on its own but if one turned a cleverly disguised wheel on its stomach it would lope across a small space. It was small enough to fit into the palm of a hand, it was made of silver, stylized filigree, a small blue light within the chest shone lightly. The craftsmanship was excellent and there was nary a flaw one could find without nitpicking.

He had waited to present it to the governess personally. It had taken him many hours to craft and he had wished to see how she received it in person. He was, admittedly, not very good with people nor presentations and so he tried to keep his speaking to a minimum, simply a formal greeting and presentation. He decided he would let his work do the talking for him.

All in all it seemed to go quite well, he managed to not make a fool of himself, didn't trip over his words once and the governess seemed pleased with the small wolf which brought him a small sense of pride. It also helped spread word of his skill and perhaps began to override other rumors that swirled around the young man.

[Susumu Ami]

Ami was not one to worry about the water-marks of her introduction card, or if it was bone or a scillian rail typeface. No. The Susumu heiress was one to do things in the old fashioned manner, even as she was dressed in a well cut business suit.

Even in the den of the enemy, she was fully polite, bowing before making her introduction.

"Greetings. I am Susumu Ami, thank you for the invitation. I'm looking forward to these opportunities and the ability to enjoy your world in its entirety." She was graceful, and every word was the truth, even as others likely viewed her with suspicion, if not outright hatred.

Then her smile, wicked as sin, graced her face. From behind her back, she produced her gift. Inside the box, a pair of gorgeous bottles. "From my homeworld, two bottles of the finest perfume, one I enjoy quite a bit. For one such as... alluring.. as yourselves..." Her voice dropped low, tempting one to lean in closer. On the bottle, in flowing Calligraphy, was the label. Shahai No. 5.

Perhaps it was the scandal of such a gift, or how it was presented, but it left mixed reviews...

[Utaku Itsuka]

Having been at the helm of essentially a taxi/tour agency for almost 10 years, business cards weren't exactly uncharted territory for Itsuka.

That's not to say she'd had to prepare cards especially for the governor before, of course. But she didn't have a terribly hard time creating a decent chop, at least. It wasn't particularly artful, but she did both her name and the 'Itsuka' used in the 'Wherever', it could do the trick.

The gift... she thought for a long time, but ultimately decided to go with the obvious: an invitation for a flight around the island aboard the Float. But it needed some kind of special flair. The invitation shaped like a map of the island? That worked, but wasn't enough.

In the end the suggestion came from the coworkers. A kirigami on a map, showing the path she would suggest for a flight to showcase Shiawase Islands' beauties and imponent features - Mount Nakahama, Mountain Jinsei, Shiro Ei from above, of course, high-rise buildings through the Shotengai and a suave descent at the Harbourfront. Now that could be convincing!

... if she had properly presented it, of course. She waited in line while looking at the envelope, also neatly folded with some details. Then, when she noted it would be a rather long wait, she put it neatly in her jacket's pocket.

Or thought she had.

When her time came, she greeted the governor politely, reached for the envelope in her pocket, and...

"Oh. Oh. I'll... please, Yasuki-dono, if you'll see the next person, I'll be back in a moment"

She ultimately found it on the ground. It ended up near the bottom of the pile of gifts.

[Yasuki Honoka]

Yasuki Honoka partook of the ritual to grant Ayame a very particular gift. While others endeavored greatly to ensure their presentation was immaculate and brought them attention, Honoka was less concerned by this facet. Honoka herself was purely interested in ensuring the gift itself would be of the greatest quality. After all, it was something she considered Ayame would find most useful albeit not necessary.

Honoka gifts Ayame a workup of Honoka's appraisal of all of the invited potential business partners. A work that would require time to peruse fully but a all too important companion to anyone wishing to make the decisions Ayame is setting out to make this event.

The event is closed.

The event proved to be chaotic, with some having different ideas about the custom of card exchanges, while others resorted to introductions in more traditional means, and there were a few who showed up with a dramatic flair that could not be matched. Once the chaos had settled down, the attendees would have made themselves and their own business (if any) known to the public. Most importantly, they had put their proverbial hat in the ring for the bid.

There was a large variety of gifts from the governor and her office, but only one would receive the most talk would be the honourable Tamori Kanna's honourable gift of her honourable divination shells.

"These are pretty cute, much like you, Tamori-san. Maybe these will help me in guiding my province to a better future. Thank you," Yasuki Ayame would say in appreciation.
