[Day 7 - Early Afternoon] Bid Event: Tsuneo's Shiro
Posted: Sat Nov 22, 2025 10:20 am
Tsuneo's Shiro is a long-running program on the Silver Fin Productions networks, a show that has been long-running since the creation of the informator. Traditionally, the show pits sponsored heimen against a ridiculous obstacle course that often results in embarrassing fumbles and botches. It seems to have a continued following with the older Crab generation as the main audience. Naturally, the show does not see any followers outside of the Clan.
Silver Fin Productions has planned to shoot an episode of Tsuneo's Shiro on Shiawase Island, both in hopes of adding some content to their newest channel and potentially involving some of the prospective investors in the hopes of having them participate in the long-running Crab tradition. However, Yasuki Umiko has successfully petitioned to change that tradition, as such a show could be considered cruel to the heimen involved, and other Clans might not view such activities as a comedy as the locals do. Instead, the show will now have samurai participating in the competition. Presumptively, such a competition will be easy for trained samurai and will showcase their athletic spirit!
Magic: Magic is not allowed unless the character rolls contested Agility / Stealth (Spellcasting) against the crowd. Emphasis is needed to make the roll, and only spells that last at least for an hour can be employed. Needless to say, getting caught has consequences. Soshi Shugenja school technique can be used to bypass this restriction.
Race Against Time
This event is a race against time, with athletes doing their best to finish the obstacle course with the best time. Time Units will be used to measure how much is required to complete a particular course. There are some that will have a set number of Time Units to complete, with the possibility to speed up their efforts with Called Raises. However, some failures may result in the athlete taking up additional Time Units if they try to shortcut their efforts and fumble. Some failures may result in the athlete being eliminated from the competition.
The obstacle course must be completed in order, and until the athlete is eliminated by any of the obstacle conditions. The theme for the particular obstacle course is escaping the Shadowlands.
Obstacle 1: The Oni Puzzle
Each athlete begins before a large gate, where they must complete by putting together a simple puzzle of an oni figure to open the gate. While fearsome looking and able to strike fear into the hearts of many heimen, the puzzle is only four pieces made of magnetized foam boards. Only when they are arranged in the right combination will the athlete be able to proceed! The athlete may either make a skill check using Lore: Shadowlands/Intelligence or Investigation/Perception at TN15.
On success, the obstacle is completed in 3 Time Units. Each Called Raise will further reduce the number of Time Units by 1, to a minimum of 1 Time Unit. On failure, the obstacle is completed in 4 Time Units instead.
Obstacle 2: Zombie Smash
Through the gates, the athlete will be confronted by a monstrous zombie creature! The zombie is represented by a volunteer wearing a comically large foam suit with a detachable head. The athlete will be given either a foam tetsubo or a foam katana, which they must utilize to vanquish the zombie before they can proceed. If they are unable to vanquish the zombie in three tries, they will be tackled and devoured!
The athlete will be given three strikes at the zombie, using either Heavy Weapons/Agility or Katana/Agility, each strike adding 1 Time Unit to their total. The zombie's TN to Hit is 10. If the zombie is struck 3 times or a total of 3 Called Raises are accumulated in total to behead the zombie, then the obstacle is considered passed. The athlete is considered first in Initiative and against a human opponent of lesser Honour.
If the athlete is unable to strike the zombie 3 times or unable to collect a total of 3 Called Raises by 3 strikes, they are eliminated from the competition!
Obstacle 3: Boulder Dash
Past the zombie, the athlete will be funnelled to a corridor with a steep incline made of rocky-looking foam padding. The athlete will have to do their best to make their way upwards with few handholds along the wall. To make matters worse, there are ogre-dressed volunteers who will be continuously dropping foam boulders from the top of the corridor to slow the athlete further, making the path truly treacherous. This will require both endurance and quick feet to traverse!
The athlete will need to make either a skill check using Defense/Reflexes, Defense/Stamina, or Stealth (Sneaking)/Agility against a Cumulative TN 60. Each roll made here will add 1 Time Unit. Low-skill use does not result in Honour loss.
Obstacle 4: Uncertain Terrain
Once past the ogre assault, the athlete will be faced with the treacherous and unconquerable terrain of the Shadowlands itself! This is represented by a rather frightening set of spinning cogs in which the athlete must either traverse in quick succession without losing their footing or wait for the most inopportune time when the cogs stop spinning. Time is of the essence here, requiring a bit of judgment and bravery from the athlete!
In order to traverse the uncertain terrain, the athlete must make a skill check using either Athletics(Running)/Agility or Athletics (Climbing)/Strength against TN 45. This will cost 1 Time Unit to complete. Furthermore, the athlete may add 1 Time Unit to their total (up to a maximum of 15) to gain +1k0, as they wait for the best time to cross the path. Also, remember that rolled dice can be a maximum of 10kX before each 2k0 after 10 is converted to a kept die of 0k1.
On failure, the athlete trips and falls into the muddy waters below, resulting in them being eliminated.
Obstacle 5: Riding the Onikage
The athlete is so close to returning home, and the vicious goblin hordes are right behind them! They must, unfortunately, utilize a bit of the tainted nature to give them a leg up on the situation. Commandeering the onikage, the athlete may utilize this monstrous steed to return to the Empire! This is represented by a dressed-up mechanical horse, similar to those found at some Unicorn Clan arcades, placed atop a conveyor belt.
Riding the 'onikage' is done using either Horsemanship/Agility or Jiujitsu/Strength at TN 5 to maintain their hold during the straight forward ride. On success, the obstacle is completed in 9 Time Units. On failure, the athlete is dropped into green slimy waters and eliminated. The athlete may choose to rile up the onikage by calling a Raise, which will add a total of +10 towards the TN for each Raise (instead of the usual +5) from both the difficulty and the angered infernal creature as it tries to toss the rider off. This reduces the ride by 2 Time Units per Called Raise to a minimum of 1 Time Unit.
Finish Line
The race is difficult, and the challenge is ridiculous, but it has a finish line. The few athletes who finish the race are greeted by the audience and a gathering of clapping heimen. Ultimately, this race is looking for a first-place, second-place and a third-place finalist by the least collected Time Units. Ties are broken by the least amount of Time Units collected in Obstacle 5: Riding the Onikage, then by the least amount of Time Units collected in Obstacle 4: Uncertain Terrain.
In the event there are not enough athletes who are able to finish the race, placement is still determined by the athlete who completed the most obstacles and then by the least amount of collected Time Units after their elimination.
The first-place winner is awarded 9 Bid Points and +0.5 Glory.
The second-place winner is awarded 7 Bid Points and +0.3 Glory.
The third-place winner is awarded 5 Bid Points and +0.1 Glory.
Those who finish the competition without being eliminated receive a further +0.2 Glory, stacking with placement.
Those who have Cursed By the Realm with either Sakkaku or Jigoku instead, and if they are eliminated in the event, instead suffer an embarrassing mishap that will be circulated among the Shiawase Island locals. They do not receive any Glory and suffer +0.3 Infamy instead.
